Ghulam Mohammad (b. 1987, Kachi Balochistan, Pakistan) graduated on a Scholarship of UMISA in BFA from the Beaconhouse National University Lahore in 2013 and completed his Master’s in Art Education from Beaconhouse National University Lahore in 2017. In his practice, Ghulam explores the relationship between language and identity in a cultural, historical & contemporary context, engaging with the politics of language by creating complex three-dimensional forms out of Urdu and Persian letters which he manually carves out of books and pastes on wasli paper. By breaking apart the linear structures of language that govern our understanding of the world, Ghulam questions the power narratives and implications associated with it. He is the first Pakistani artist to win The Jameel Art Prize ‘4’ from the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2016, and in 2018 he was a jury member of the Jameel Art Prize ‘5’ at the Victoria and Albert Museum. His solo exhibition ‘(Uqda) Unpuzzled’ was held at 1 x 1 Art Gallery (Dubai, 2021). Currently, he is teaching as an Assistant Professor in the Fine Arts Department at Beaconhouse National University, Lahore.
