Abhishek Narayan Verma is a visual artist based in Vadodara, Gujarat. He graduated in painting from the College of Art, New Delhi in 2012 and pursued his post-graduation in printmaking from the Faculty of Fine Arts, MS University, Baroda in 2015, where he was a gold medallist and received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture in 2014. Among his most recent felicitations are the Manorama Young Printmaker award runner-up, New Delhi (2020); the Jean-Claude Reynal Travel Scholarship, France (2019); and Award in Graphics, Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata (2018). He has participated in several national and international exhibitions, including a solo show at Musée d'Aquitaine in Bordeaux, France (2019).
The imagery in his prints, paintings, and drawings stem from the persistent flux in society and its demands on the individual; politics and its resultant insecurities in communities and people. The artworks revolve around ideas of dysfunctionality, social conditioning and memory, which he injects into his characters by using stark contrasts or subtleties with a pinch of absurdity. These settings reflect the mental states of the persona; transforming the act of thinking into an investigative process through a selection of “what if’s”, and building the arrangements in reaction to his own image-making.
