Alexander Gorlizki (b. 1967, London, United Kingdom) studied Fine Art at Bristol Polytechnic, followed by an MFA in Sculpture at the Slade, London. Alexander currently lives and works in New York. His works on paper originate from a fascination with Indian miniature paintings—a tradition that he has subverted and applied to his particular visual language. In the mid-1990s, he opened Pink City Studio in Jaipur, India, with Riyaz Uddin, a master painter with a perfect command of the miniature technique that goes back over 600 years. After Alexander draws out wonderfully odd subjects, patterns, and compositions with tongue-in-cheek humour, the artworks travel between Jaipur and New York, evolving into intricate masterpieces through collaborative refinements over the years. Alexander’s first presentation with Anant Art was in the 2018 group exhibition, Hashiya: The Margin, curated by Dr. B. N. Goswami. His solo exhibition entitled What The Camera Didn’t See, showcasing a collection of artworks created in collaboration with Pink City Studio, was on view at the Museum of Art & Photography (MAP), Bengaluru, from December 2023 to March 2024.
