Puja Mondal (b. 1994, Kolkata, India) obtained her Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in the years 2019 and 2017 respectively. She was an Elizabeth Greenshield Foundation grantee in Painting in 2023 and was awarded the Nasreen Mohamedi Scholarship from her alma mater in 2017. Puja’s artworks have evolved as expressions of nostalgia in response to changing spaces and the loss of cultural handiwork with time. Her practice is largely influenced by miniature painting and Jaipuri fresco techniques. She perceives her art as a tool for voicing the insecurities that come with changing political climates and instilling a sense of hope and respect for those engaged in dissent and dialogue. Literary sources are an intrinsic part of her practice, often appearing in her works as images and quotations from historical writings, novels, poems and speeches, allowing her to bring forth another dimension to the narratives she weaves. Her selected exhibitions include The Figure of Sound, a group exhibition curated by Preeti Bahadur, Shridharani Gallery (New Delhi, 2023), and Mycelial Legacies, curated by Deeksha Nath (New Delhi, 2023) among others. Puja is currently based in Vadodara, India.
