Thamshangpha Maku

Thamshangpha Maku (b. 1999, Chandel, India) completed his Bachelor's in Fine Arts (Painting) from the College of Art, New Delhi in 2020 and Master's in Visual Arts (Painting) from The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 2022. His practice predominantly deals with the forms, motifs and imagery seen in tribal Naga culture, which stem from an observation of indigenous flora and fauna. The co-existential relationship between humans and their habitat is reflected in the cultural practices of these regions, which subscribe to the concept of nurturing nature. The socio-cultural realities of the peripheral regions and his own experiences of discrimination, alienation and xenophobia in the central parts of the country have created a dialogue of resilience within his artistic process. Thamshangpha was a recipient of the Emerging Artists Award, Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art and Mrinalini Mukherjee Foundation, New Delhi in 2022, and the International Award, Students’ Biennale, Kochi in 2023. His notable exhibitions include Why My Karap Mourns, India Art Fair, Artist-in-Residence exhibition, curated by Mario D’Souza (New Delhi, 2024), Lateral B(i)nds, India Art Fair Young Collectors’ Programme in collaboration with Immerse Fellowship, presented by the Somaiya Vidyavihar University, curated by Satyam Yadav (New Delhi, 2024),  Lost Fragrance of Infinity, a fundraiser group exhibition curated by Saloni Doshi, Space 118 (Mumbai, 2023), among others.
