Speaking to The Listening Heaven

POUSHALI DAS
2018

Texts: Latika Gupta

“Das’ paintings reveal her insistence on working with the hand; her skill in handling pigment, and the agility of her brushstrokes have been mastered over two decades of working and intense study of traditional methods of painting in the medieval and early modern period-be it the “miniature” paintings of the Persian and Mughal courts or the watercolours of the Bengal School. Das also follows in the footsteps of Baroda-based artist Nilima Sheikh (b. 1945) in her approach to material and method, but also in looking to the past, mythologies and folklore, as a historical and visual resource to spin visual magical tales.”
